The article is devoted to the sustainable development of coastal urban areas located beyond the Arctic circle, a notable example of which is the administrative, financial, scientific and multicultural centre of the Arctic city of Murmansk. The geographical position of the city (on the coast of the ice-free Kola Bay in the Barents Sea), as well as its natural and climatic specifics make this place unique. Having considered briefly the demographic, socio-economic, infrastructural, technical and environmental aspects of sustainable development, focuses on the problems of modernization of separate urban systems as one of the targeted measures to improve the socio-economic, environmental, socio-cultural and tourist attraction of the city . The proposed directions of modernization are the diversification and development of the trans¬port system, optimization of the landscape through the implementation of planning decisions and enhance the landscape and aesthetic appeal of residential neighborhoods and recreational areas and focuses on using already existing products and improving standards of living and comfort of the population, and the development of tourism in the region.
