Urbanisation in the Russian Regions

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to assess of the urbanisation level in the regions of the Russian Federation and to determine the regions’ positions according to the urbanisation index. Materials and methods. We assessed urbanisation in the regions of the Russian Federation and fixed changes in the urbanisation level of Russia’s regions in 2015 and 2020 using statistical materials considering the quantitative characteristics of urbanisation (indicators of urban population and its concentration in cities of different sizes) using the index method. Results and discussion. Russia’s regions were grouped according to the obtained data of urbanisation index in the Russian regions. The regions are divided into the following groups: highly urbanised, medium urbanised, poorly urbanised. The characteristic features of groups are defined. Conclusion. Regional differences in the urbanisation level are associated with various start periods of urbanisation processes and features of the territories’ exploration. The impact of urbanisation is multivalued, we determined both positive and negative consequences.
