The purpose of the study is assessment of the availability of the transportation network in the municipal districts of the Chechen Republic for the development of tourism and recreation. Materials and methods. Using statistical materials of the Federal State Statistics Service, the coeffi cient approach was used to assess the availability of the transportation network in the Chechen Republic. Using GIS technologies, the density of the road network in municipal areas was assessed and the map was drawn up. Results and discussion. The results of calculations of indicators of transport development (density of communication routes, Engel and Goltz coeffi cients) and their comparative assessment with the regions of the North Caucasian Federal District revealed that the values of the estimated parameters are close to the average for the district. Based on the results of road network density calculations, all municipal districts are grouped into fi ve groups: from low to high provision. The most signifi cant objects of tourism and recreation are indicated for each group of districts and priority types of tourism are justifi ed. The share of districts with maximally developed transport network is 21,5 %. These are the most densely populated and developed areas. A signifi cant part of the territory (66,8 %), covering semi-desert and mountainous zones, is poorly provided with transportation network. Conclusion. The problem of road network provision is particularly acute in high mountainous areas. They are of signifi cant interest for the development of the tourism and recreation industry, as unique objects of natural and cultural heritage are concentrated here. Further modernization of transport infrastructure will stimulate the development of tourism and recreation and related industries.
