Abstract

The purpose of this study is the development and testing of a methodology for ranking groups of watercourses, with homogeneous morphometric characteristics and nature of land use according to their level of environmental hazard to the tourism industry. This methodology is an eff ective tool for integrated water resources management and can be applied to form an information base necessary for priorities setting when planning environmental protection measures in the basins of natural watercourses in resort territories, as well as for forecasting the dynamics of the state of natural watercourses and the marine environment at their confl uence with the sea based on the identifi ed patterns of development common to groups of watercourses with unchanged nature and intensity of land use. Materials and methods. The methodology is based on an integral scoring system according to three groups of criteria: geological (presence and genesis of hazardous geological processes), hydrochemical (frequency of MPC exceedance), and hydrobiological (results of biotesting of river and sea water using *Daphnia magna*, *Chlorella vulgaris*, and *Phaeodactylum tricornutum*). The study was conducted on watercourses of the Sochi Black Sea region, grouped by morphometric features and type of anthropogenic load. Results and discussion. Three groups of rivers were identifi ed by the level of environmental hazard. The greatest hazard (6 out of 6 possible points) is posed by small rivers experiencing intense technogenic impact (Kherota, Bitkha, etc.), where degradation of biocenoses and high toxicity of seawater in their plume zones are observed. Watercourses of the fi rst group (Mzymta, Sochi, etc.), which are of key water management and recreational importance, showed a high level of hazard (5.5 points). Small watercourses within protected areas were recognized as the least dangerous (3 points). It was found that the nature of land use is a critically important criterion for grouping and risk assessment. Conclusions. The developed methodology has proven its eff ectiveness for the integral assessment of environmental hazard and is a practical tool for water resources management and planning of environmental protection measures in resort territories. The identifi ed patterns make it possible to predict changes in the state of water ecosystems under conditions of constant anthropogenic pressure.
