By the early 1960's the threat of changes in the natural environment became evident in the Soviet Union, the reasons of that fact were in the development of industry and the excessive use of natural resources. Responding to these challenges, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences I.P. Gerasi-mov, created a method of geosystem monitoring aimed at effective control of environmental pollution and the compilation of a reliable forecast based on them. At the same time, determination of the reference values for the observed territories corresponding to the initial parameters of the natural environment prior to anthropogenic impact was of great importance. This function should be performed by biosphere reserves, the territories of which would serve as reference points for geosystems monitoring at the regional level.
