The purpose of the publication is to introduce readers to Ya. K. Kovalev, associate professor, candidate of technical sciences, participant of the Great Patriotic War from 27 June 1941 to 28 November 1945. Ya. K. Kovalev stood at the origins of the establishment and development of the Department of Hydrology and the specialty of engineering hydrology at the Faculty of Geography of Voronezh State University. He was an active builder of peaceful post-war life as Associate Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Geography. Materials. This article uses materials from the author's personal archive and the archive of VSU, memories and publications of colleagues and students. Conclusion. Studying Ya. K. Kovalev's autobiographical materials, archival and literary sources, talking to colleagues who had the opportunity to study and work with him, the author concludes that Ya. K. Kovalev was a bright, extraordinary personality, who left a deep mark in the history of the Land Hydrology Department, the Faculty of Geography, Voronezh State University.
