The purpose of the study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis and identify socio–economic areas on the territory of the steppe zone of Russia. Materials and methods. The works on the socio-economic zoning of the territory of Russia have been studied to a considerable extent, including the space of the steppe zone of Russia. The multi-stage method of zoning of the steppe zone of Russia is developed on the basis of the studied experience. The main and secondary signs, components and features characterizing the socio-economic development of the territory were used in the development of the methodology. Results and discussion. Two groups of regions (based on four types) are identified in the steppe zone of Russia on the basis of a comprehensive analysis of the main socio-economic indicators. The regions are united into several socio-economic districts. Each district has its own specifics and certain features: Western, Volga, Volga-Ural and West Siberian. Conclusions. The results revealed a high degree of differentiation of the space of the steppe zone of Russia by the level of socio-economic development, and a significant spread of values by the main components contributes to the blurring of the boundaries between types and partial overlap.
