Abstract

Introduction: neogene formations are quite widespread within the Voronezh Anteclise (VA). In the southeast of the VA, within topographic map M-37-XXIII, Neogene deposits had not previously been identified. As a result of the work carried out on the geological study at a scale of 1:200,000, alluvial formations of the Miocene and Pliocene were identified in the area under consideration; their division was carried out in accordance with the legend of the Donetsk series of sheets of the State Geological Map − 200/2.

Methodology: to study Neogene formations within the study area, fieldwork and laboratory analysis were conducted, and the results were interpreted. Fieldwork consisted of tracing ground geological routes and describing reference sections. The identified outcrops were sampled using the channel method. Laboratory analysis, including granulometric and complete lithological analyses, were performed to evaluate the sands. Based on the data obtained, the identified sand sections were sorted, identifying intervals corresponding to construction sands in terms of their properties.

Results and discussion: the Novopetrovsk and Pereshibin formations and the Nizhneuryvskaya subformation were identified within the study area. The Novopetrovsk formation is common on high watersheds, erodingly overlies the Oligocene Ventsov formation, and consists of sands with clay interlayers. These rocks are the oldest alluvial formations. The Pereshibin formation is developed in the extreme west of the territory, erodingly overlies various Paleogene and Upper Cretaceous units, and consists of sands with clay interlayers. The valley width ranges from hundreds of meters to 1 km. Deposits of the Nizhneuryvskaya subformation are distributed along the right side of the Lev. Bogucharka and Bogucharka river valleys; they erodely overlie Upper Cretaceous rocks, and less commonly Paleogene rocks, and are represented by sands with clay interlayers. The valley width is up to 5.2–6.3 km. The sands of the Nizhneuryvskaya subsuite are suitable as construction raw materials.

Conclusions: for the first time, deposits of the Novopetrovsk and Pereshibin suites and the Nizhneuryvskaya subsuite have been identified in this area. The latter are promising for identifying deposits of construction sand.
