Abstract

Тhe article examines the status of the proconsuls of Africa during the reforms of Diocletian (284–305 AD). Based on the analysis of epigraphic and literary sources, the author concludes that, despite the administrative transformations, the proconsuls not only retained their high social and political status but also strengthened it, acting as key agents of imperial policy and intermediaries between the central authority and local elites. The foundation of their position remained their senatorial origin, significant personal wealth, and an extensive administrative apparatus.
