Despite the fact that the investigation of a number of criminal cases of minor and moderate crimes committed by minors was attributed by the Criminal Procedure Code of the Russian Federation to the jurisdiction of the bodies of inquiry back in 2001, the question of the expediency of such a decision by the legislator has been debatable in the scientific literature for more than 20 years. The article highlights the competence of interrogators of the internal affairs bodies of the Russian Federation in criminal cases of minor and moderate crimes committed by minors, provides statistics, examples from the practice of preliminary investigation bodies, and analyzes the problems of compliance with additional guarantees of protection of the rights of a minor during the investigation.
