The article is devoted to the consideration of the phenomenon of trust as the basis of stable social relations, the basis of cooperation and the source of action/development. The author studies the reasons for the trust deficit in modern societies, noting the detrimental impact of this factor on the stability of political institutions. Special attention is paid to the nature of trust in democracies and autocracies and to the rise of populism, which methodically deform democratic institutions to maintain its power.
