The issue of the role and appointment of a prosecutor in the criminal process of the Russian Federation is considered. The argument is made that the prosecutor performs two interrelated and interdependent functions in criminal proceedings: prosecutorial supervision and criminal prosecution. The conclusion about the need to return to the prosecutor the powers to initiate a criminal case, as well as supervision over the legality of court decisions, is substantiated.
