SOCIOLINGUISTIC STATUS OF THE IVORIAN VARIANTS OF THE FRENCH LANGUAGE

The article analyses the sociolinguistic status of French in its various forms in Côte d'Ivoire (Ivory Coast). The authors note the unique sociolinguistic situation in Ivory Coast compared to other African countries. According to the authors, the two main factors which maintain French as the language of national communication there are a diverse linguistic palette of indigenous languages belonging to the Niger-Congo macro-family, and the absence among them of a single dominant language. The article describes three varieties of French spoken in the country (standard French, popular Ivorian French and ‘Nouchi’) and gives examples of the phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactic features of the popular variant and of ‘Nouchi’. Notably, the above varieties coexist and intertwine in everyday communication depending on specific communicative needs and conditions. Particular attention is paid to the process by which the three above-mentioned varieties of French gradually combine into a unique Ivorian language. The originality of the study lies in the fact that apart from examples from academic publications and Internet resources as illustrative material, it also uses recordings of spoken language by native speakers of Ivorian French. The main hypothesis of the study is that the Ivorian varieties of French, products of a whole set of sociolinguistic factors, will, over time, merge into a separate language that can be called Ivorian. The authors conclude that research into the current sociolinguistic situation in Ivory Coast reveals evidence in favour of the proposed hypothesis.
