The paper is devoted to the analysis of the cultural codes represented in the Russian folk tale and their translation into the Spanish language, considering the peculiarities of culture and thinking in two different communities. The mutual influence and inseparability of language and culture is due to the fact that culture as a sign system is fixed and represented through language, and language, in turn, cannot exist apart from culture. The iconic nature of culture has led to the emergence of the term “cultural code” meaning a set of social attitudes fixed in a particular cultural society. The folk tale, considered as an entertaining and instructive genre of folklore, is a rich source for the study of the most important culturally conditioned values, the basic opposition of “good” and “evil”, the ideals and stereotypes of various linguacultural communities. The research material is the Russian folk tale "Go I Know Not Where, Bring I Know Not What" in the literary processing by A.N. Afanasyev and its translation into the Spanish language. The text analysis is carried out with descriptive, contextual and comparative methods. On the example of the folk tale, the paper describes in detail the revealed Russian cultural codes, explains the historical and cultural features of their emergence. Also, the author analyses the approaches to translating cultural codes into Spanish with preservation or partial/complete distortion of historical and/or cultural meaning, provides hypotheses explaining the distortion of the meanings of cultural codes in translation connected with geographical, climatic, spiritual, etc. differences of the cultures.
