Importance: the subject area of research is the current state of the viticulture and winemaking industry in the Russian Federation. The article examines the priority components of the sustainable development of viticulture and winemaking, defines the role of viticulture and winemaking in achieving the country’s food security, and analyzes the current state of the industry and development prospects. During the research, a number of problems were identified that impede the progressive development of wine-making organizations, and ways to solve them were proposed. Purpose: studying the state and identifying conditions for ensuring sustainable development of viticulture and winemaking in Russia. Research design: the object of the study is economic entities specializing in viticulture and winemaking. The basis of the study was the results of statistical studies of the Federal State Statistics Service of Russia, as well as an expert assessment of the activities of leading organizations in the winemaking and viticulture industry, legal acts, organizational aspects, technological and economic principles of production, turnover and consumption of viticulture and wine products. The authors use general scientific methods of cognition: analysis, synthesis, comparison, analogy, generalization of materials. Results: sustainable development plays a key role in viticulture and winemaking, as evidenced by the attention paid to this issue at the present stage. However, the very principle of sustainable development causes widespread debate, and this significantly affects the factors and conditions for the development of the viticulture and winemaking industry. To ensure sustainable development of viticulture and winemaking, government support programs are provided. It is important to support small businesses, which will allow them to achieve not only an increase in production, but also to implement such promising areas of activity as the development of gastronomic tours and signature winemaking.
