Importance: the subject of this study is industry innovation systems, their structure, similarities and differences, dynamics and functionality. Purpose: to identify factors that form the essential features of industry innovation systems, to classify them, to take into account their influence when exerting managerial influence on the systems. Research design: аnalysis of elements, relationships, processes, dynamics and performance of innovation systems in individual types of economic activity. The systems approach is the main methodological solution used in the presented study. Results: the composition of the elements of the innovation system as it is was identified, which includes innovations, innovation processes, innovation activities and their participants, resources constituting the innovation potential, internal factors determining the course of the stages of innovation processes, including intra-system targeted management impact. The composition of meso-level innovation systems and their differences from systems at other levels are studied. The similarities common to all meso-level innovation systems are summarized, and the factors determining their differences, which include the characteristics of types of economic activity, functions and goals of participants, are identified. A conclusion is made about the preferable use of a systems approach to the study of phenomena and processes in the innovation sphere, including at the meso-level.
