Importance: a set of theoretical approaches to the study of regional tourist and recreational complexes and their evolution in the context of the transformation of the socio-economic system of the region under the influence of the digitalization of the economy and the large-scale introduction of scientific and technological progress at the present stage. Purpose: to study the evolution of theoretical approaches to understanding the essential and substantive aspects of the development of the regional tourist and recreational complex. Research design: the research tools include deduction, induction, comparative, systemic and functional analysis. The research is aimed at systematizing existing theoretical views on the essential and substantive aspects of the development of regional tourist and recreational complexes and substantiating the author’s position on the theoretical understanding of the role and place of the tourist and recreational complex in the regional socio-economic system. Results: the current theoretical views on the study of regional tourist and recreational complexes are analyzed, their advantages and disadvantages are presented. Theoretical approaches to the study of tourist and recreational complexes are highlighted: infrastructural, territorial, sectoral, systemic, ecosystem. The prospects of applying an ecosystem approach in modern conditions, characterized by the study of tourist and recreational complexes as a communicative community of stakeholders united by common goals, effectively using the resources available within the region and widely applying innovative technologies and digital platforms, are substantiated.
