Abstract

Concentration dependences of diffusion permeability and sodium chloride diffusion flux density were obtained for heterogeneous cation-exchange and anion-exchange membranes RalexCM-Pes and RalexAM-Pes with different service lives in an industrial electrodialyzer. The membranes were operated in concentration/desalination mode of aqueous salt solutions (waste from complex mineral fertilizer production). Based on experimental data on the concentration dependence of the integral diffusion permeability coefficient and specific electrical conductivity of ion-exchange membranes, the transport numbers of counterions were calculated. It was found that with increasing service life of ion-exchange membranes in the electrodialysis apparatus, their diffusion permeability as well as the density of electrolyte diffusion fluxes through the membrane increase, while the transport numbers of counterions decrease. The diffusion characteristics of RalexCM-Pes and RalexAM-Pes ion-exchange membranes are consistent with changes in their transport-structural parameters obtained previously from independent studies of the specific electrical conductivity of samples, as well as with changes in membrane surface morphology. In this article, the patterns of changes in the transport characteristics of ion-exchange membranes are analyzed from the perspective of their relationship with the structure and exchange capacity of the membranes.
