Abstract

Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia (L.) Planch.) belongs to chemically rich taxa, which allows predicting a wide range of biological activity. The plant has an extensive raw material base, does not require cultivation, and has a high degree of regrowth renewability. The Virginia creeper leaves have not yet been used in official medicine; there are fragmentary studies that have established the presence of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activity of extracts from Virginia creeper leaves. However, the chemical composition of the plant has still been insufficiently studied. Recently, most research has been devoted to the determination of individual components of the chemical composition of medicinal plants, food additives, and functional food products by chromatography methods, including GC‑MS. This work aimed to study the component composition of the volatile fraction of Virginia creeper leaves by GC‑MS.

The object of study was Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) leaves, collected manually with petioles in 2022 in the Voronezh region from wild plants at the end of summer. The analysis was performed using Agilent Technologies 7890B GC System hardware complex (Shared Research Facilities Center of Voronezh State University) after preliminary extraction of biologically active compounds from the plant raw material with 96% ethanol.

As a result of the study, mass spectra of 19 organic substances were obtained, of which 13 were identified. Among the identified compounds were fragments of such classes of substances as carbohydrates, aromatic compounds of the hydroxycinnamic acid type, diterpene alcohols, dicarboxylic acid, tigliane-type diterpenoids, fat-soluble vitamins, and phytosterols. For the first time, the chemical composition of Virginia creeper leaves was studied by GC‑MS, resulting in the identification of 13 compounds from various classes. The possibility of expanding the uses of Virginia creeper leaves and the prospects for their use as an antitumor agent were demonstrated.
