Erratologic aspect of rendering idiolects in literary translation

Abstract

The article is devoted to the ways of rendering the idiolect of the central character of the novel "Flowers for Algernon" written in English by D. Keyes in translations into Spanish and Russian. The notion of an idiolect in modern linguistics is specified. An overview of the studies of idiolects of literary characters in translation studies is provided. The history of the creation of the novel "Flowers for Algernon" and the characteristics of the protagonist's language activity are given. Features of the construction and lexical-syntactic content of Charlie Gordon's diary entries are directly related to his mental development and are manifested at the beginning of the novel in numerous language errors. The aim of the article is to identify individual language deviations of the protagonist at all language levels and to establish translation strategies and methods of their rendering in texts in other languages. It is established that the asymmetry in the phonetic, lexical and syntactic system of non-closely related languages requires the use of complex translation transformations to render the erratologic component of Charlie Gordon's idiolect completely. Special attention is given to the following of the requirement for the naturalness of the errors made by the central character in translations in accordance with his intellectual abilities, as well as to the preservation of the author's method of gradually reducing the number of language deviations in Charlie Gordon's writings. The analysis shows the tendency of the translators of the novel into Russian and Spanish to implement the strategy of maximal consideration of the idiolect of literary characters in order to achieve a similar communicative effect that the novel has on potential recipients. The materials of the article can contribute to further theoretical and practical studies of an idiolect as an object of translation.
