Abstract

The article deals with the influence of social changes caused by the contemporary political context on the English language development. The subject of the study comprises neologisms of the political discourse that appeared in 2020–2022. Its relevance is based on the current unprecedented political environment that triggered the appearance of new realities which have to be interpreted. The aim of the article is to identify peculiarities of the contemporary political neologisms and to define its interconnection with social changes. The research materials include online editions of The Washington Post, CNN, Las Cruses Sun News, Fox Business, The Indian Express, The New York Times, National Review, New York Magazine, Fox News, Le Monde, The White House and Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The study based on the gathered lexical material reflects the specifics of political discourse and the variety of its inner communication processes that affect the mechanisms of new word creation. Firstly, neologisms of political discourse may occur as a result of language game that is a part of commutation strategy sometimes used by politicians as a manipulation tool. Secondly, political neologisms tend to contain an evaluation component which defines its connotation. Thirdly, political neologisms are able to outline relevant political trends and, moreover, serve as a guide in the political space. The results of the study underpin the idea of language and politics interconnection and the ability of language to reflect changes in the political environment considered to be human.
