Emphatic discourse markers in Thomas Malory’s epic “Le morte d’Arthur”

The paper reveals the functional semantics features of emphatic discourse markers in medieval English literature. The relevance of the research deals with the absence of particular analysis of the functioning of emphatic desemanticized units that express the speaker’s emotional attitude to the situation, highlighting and emphasizing certain elements of discourse. The study uses lexicographic, descriptive and contextual methods, as well as corpus analysis of parallel texts. The examples of emphatic discourse markers in their context usage have been studied in Thomas Malory’s epic novel “LeMorted’Arthur”, which is considered to be the iconic work in English literature of the 15th century. Excerpts with emphatic lexical means as discourse markers in T. Malory’s work have been collected via AntConc program. The article describes the peculiarities of emphatic discourse markers, shows their diversity and frequency in the novel in question. The author distinguishes an intentional and semantic group of lexical units, including introductory words and particles united by an emphatic function. The paper interprets the functioning of these types of emphatic discourse markers and explains their functional differences. A field approach to the characterization of the functional and semantic unity of emphatic discourse markers is proposed. The article analyzes the use of emphatic discourse markers depending on the type of utterance and substantiates the great functional potential of emphatic discourse markers in dialogic discourse. In the course of the study, it is argued that the use of emphatic units in the replica function is not typical of discourse markers. The paper studies the component structure and positional behavior of emphatic discourse markers, presents their translation options, as well as ways to translate them. Based on the analysis of parallel texts, the question of maintaining or changing the degree of emotional load of emphatic markers when translated into another language is considered.
