Synonymy of the scientific & technical english terms related to the oil and gas processing industry in the context of their translation into russian

Abstract

This article dwells upon the detailed study of the synonymy in the scientific and technical terminology system related to the oil and gas processing industry, as well as to studying the features and difficulties of the synonymous terms translation from English into Russian. The research mainly concentrates on the ambiguity of the terminology synonymy, synonymous terms initiation factors in oil and gas processing related fields, followed by the terms’ classification in this sphere. The authors of the paper come to the conclusion that the synonymous terms used in oil and gas processing industry have appeared due to various linguistic factors, among which are borrowings, formation of terminological neologisms, difference in the methods of term formation, etc. The analysis of theoretical sources and empirical material allows the authors to assert that, being one of the manifestations of paradigmatic relationships between terms, synonymous terms used in this sphere are divided into absolute synonyms and doublet synonyms. One of the findings is that translation of scientific and technical texts on oil and gas processing is proven to be complicated due to the ambiguity of Russian terms variants. The paper attempts to identify the most common strategies for translating synonymous terms in scientific and technical texts in the sphere of the oil and gas processing industry from English into Russian. The most commonly used ways of translating synonymous terms include translation using equivalents, analogues, loan translation, abbreviations, transliteration, as well as a number of various translation transformations. There is usually no descriptive translation used.
