The main purpose of the article is to describe the signs of the Russian symbolic mother-in-law concept structure. It is necessary to solve the following three tasks to achieve the goal: 1. Analyze etymological and historical-etymological dictionaries and determine the list of motivating signs of the mother-in-law concept; 2. Identify symbolic signs among them and study them on the basis of language material taken from the National Corpus of the Russian Language (www.ruscorpora.ru); 3. Determine a set of conceptual signs of the mother-inlaw concept on the basis of the explanatory dictionaries of the 19th – 21st centuries and the National Corpus of the Russian language. Six motivating signs of the mother-in-law concept were found as a result of the analysis of nine etymological dictionaries, among them three belong to the symbolic class: ‘mother’, ‘parent’, ‘give birth’. Among etymologists, there is no consensus on the origin of the word mother-in-law – the main representative of the concept under study: some attribute its appearance in Russian from the X–XI centuries, others – to the beginning of the XVIII century. The main feature of the concept under study is that in its structure, among the motivating ones, there are symbolic signs, which make up half of the total volume of motivating signs. The highlighted motivating signs of the mother-in-law concept, which are symbolic, can be combined in a single block: (Divine) motherhood (3 signs). These three signs: 'mother', 'give birth', 'parent' reflect the peculiarities of the Russian mentality, which preserved in different periods of the language history the memory of the cult of the Great Mother Goddess – the founder of the world, which was consistently reproduced in the veneration of Makosh, mother – the raw earth and the Mother of God. Conceptual signs of the mother-in-law concept are grouped into two blocks: 1. Daughter's mother (‘woman (middle-aged)’, ‘wife’, ‘mother’, ‘parent’, ‘give birth’, ‘aunt’; 2. Having a married daughter (‘in relation to a son-in-law’); 3. Attitude (‘respect’, ‘discontent / dislike’).
