Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of kinship terms in Russian and Kabardian cultures, which are, currently, closely interacting in conditions of contact bilingualism. This interaction, which is important, is carried out under the infl uence of Internet culture, which characterizes the cultural transition from the 20th to the 21st centuries. Some basic lexical units of the lexical system are analyzed, i.e. words denoting persons related by direct (blood) relationships. The possibility of their use not only as referent terms indicating a specifi c relative, but also as names used in the vocative function has been revealed. It is shown that the implementation of this function depends on the cultural traditions, communicative behavior and speech etiquette of the representatives of the particular (Kabardian) ethnic group. It has been established that under the conditions of Kabardian-Russian bilingualism (especially contact bilingualism), the Russian language acquires special signifi cance, acting as a donor language and thereby enriching the terminology system of the Kabardian language with both native Russian lexical units for their use in the referent function, and with various morphological means used for certain pragmatic purposes of communication. The study showed that in the Kabardian language, unlike Russian, there are practically no diminutives to implement the diminutive function. It has been demonstrated that the Russian language thereby creates conditions for the successful intercultural communication between representatives of the two ethnic groups, as well as positive changes in the speech etiquette of speakers of different languages and cultures in accordance with the current realities. The study also revealed the special implementation of the law of linguistic economy (A. Martinet): the Kabardian language, instead of simplifying its lexical units (simplifying the formal structure, i.e. inventing terms that are phonetically simpler), turns to the Russian language, borrows and assimilates its kinship terms.
