Abstract

Тhis article is devoted to the study of the properties of adverbial lexemes with the semantics “expression of the author’s assessment”, occupying an initial position in a sentence. The purpose of the study is to fi nd out the reason for the promotion of these lexemes in the initial position of the sentence, as well as to clarify the features of their functioning. To denote this feature of word order in a sentence, the term fronting is used in English grammar. The article provides various examples of the use of fronted lexemes and proposes their classifi cation. Using the example of contexts obtained from journalistic texts taken from the NOW English language corpus, the author attempts to explain one of the possible reasons for the fronting of lexemes expressing the author's assessment. The reason for such positioning of lexemes, according to the author, is the reduction of one of the parts of a complex sentence, which can be complete or incomplete depending on the presence of other lexemes combined with fronted adverbial. In addition, the author compares their positions in diff erent parts of the same sentence. A set of some contextual preferences for these lexemes is established, in connection with which a range of typical situations is identifi ed, when describing which the speaker uses one or another adverb in the initial position. The most common types of situations are perspective, point of view, statement of fact and description. The delimitation of one or another type of situation is carried out based on linguistic means, which serve as lexical and grammatical markers involved in designating a certain type of situation. The analysis of linguistic material is carried out using methods of comparison, observation and transformation.
