Abstract

The paper deals with the problem of linguistic representation of the emotion of joy in the literary text. The work offers the analysis of the emotional units at the lexical, syntactical and morphological levels of language which the author uses as mechanisms of the verbalization of the emotion “joy”. The subject of the study are the features of the representation of the emotion of joy in modern English and Russian prose. The paper aims to identify the main means of linguistic expression of joy in modern English and Russian prose in a comparative analysis. In the study, the following methods were used: descriptive analysis, comparative analysis and statistical analysis. Several conclusions can be drawn from the study. Firstly, emotions can be represented in the language on different levels. The emotion of joy in English, as well as in Russian modern prose, is expressed at the lexical level with the help of emotionally colored adjectives with positive connotation, cliché phrases, interjections; syntactically – with the means of exclamations, syntactic repetitions and emphatic constructions. Morphological means of expressing joy are more characteristic of Russian literary texts. Secondly, the problem of linguistic representation should be examined taking into account the features of expressing emotionality in different linguistic views of the world. When representing in a modern literary language, the emotion of joy can reflect the linguistic and cultural characteristics of two groups of language speakers. The practical application of the results is seen in the possibility of using them in courses on intercultural communication, in classes on the theory and practice of translation, in seminars on comparative linguistics, etc.
