The article examines the correlations that exist between the linguistic and translation aspects of the language. French derivative words, otherwise complex signs that develop polysemy and methods of their translation on the material of a literary text, are considered. The word-formation and semantic characteristics of complex signs are described, it is indicated that they have various degrees of idiomaticity, each of which shows a different type of correlation between word-formation and lexical meanings. It is emphasized that the symmetry/asymmetry of these types of linguistic meanings is a key point when choosing translation means of interpreting the author’s concept. The systematic patterns of derived words translation are revealed so is their dependence on the type of correlation of lexical and word-formative meanings. The article concluded the following: when translating regular meanings of a complex sign, a regular derivational structure is maintained, or lexical means are used that regularly reflect the semantics of the French word-formation means (negative prefixes). It is noted that there are no typical means how to transfer the idea of negation in translation, if the French complex sign has a significant degree of idiomaticity. The correlation between the translation scheme and the linguistic characteristics of the derived word is pointed out, which reflects the isomorphism of cognitive, linguistic and translation structures.
