Abstract

Subject. This study examines the dating goals and methods of Russian students in the context of their financial background. It introduces the concept of "economic self-sufficiency", which encompasses such characteristics as material well-being, employment status, and reliance on personal earnings as the primary source of income.
Purpose. To identify the relationship between students' economic self-sufficiency level and matrimonial behaviour at the dating stage, including dating goals, methods, and partner preferences.
Methodology. The study draws on the survey of students of Russian universities. The research sample comprises 3,838 respondents from 164 universities located across 46 federal subjects. Data analysis relied on the regression analysis methods.
Results. The growth of the students' economic self-sufficiency directly correlates with the increase in: 1) the number of dating methods used and the likelihood of meeting through work, public places, friends and online dating services; 2) the likelihood of pursuing long-term relationships as a dating goal; 3) the likelihood of pursuing short-term dating goals; 4) the importance of specific partner characteristics (height, appearance and nationality). Notably, marriage and procreation exhibit a relatively low prevalence as dating goals, and economic self-sufficiency appears to exert no influence on the likelihood of pursuing them.
Conclusions. We identified a significant influence of the students' economic self-sufficiency level on individual aspects of matrimonial behaviour. Economically self-sufficient students demonstrate a higher level of activity in partner seeking aimed at establishing long-term relationships.
