The article reveals the essence of collaborative consumption as a socio-economic phenomenon of a post-industrial society by studying its evolution from simple to more complex practices of such consumer cooperation. The identifi cation of the complex of characteristic features of modern collaborative consumption has allowed a distinction to be made between it and other forms of consumption based on access to goods, without ownership of them. A quantitative analysis of data on the Russian economy showed a rapid growth in the relatively small aggregate volume of transactions related to collaborative consumption practices.
