FROM THE EXPERIENCE OF MODELING DICTIONARIES IN MODERN LEXICOGRAPHY

Abstract

Тhe article is devoted to the study of English dictionary models in modern lexicographic research. The main stages of creating monolingual and bilingual reference books and the use of corpus data in the process of modeling dictionaries are studied. Similarities in the process of creating printed and electronic dictionaries are highlighted, such as planning of the reference work, determining the planned structure, work on designing mega-, macro- and microstructure of dictionaries, etc. A distinctive feature of modeling an electronic publication is the preparation of special software where dictionary materials will be stored. Currently special attention is paid to the needs and demands of the user. As part of potential audience needs study lexicographers use a special tool – user surveys as a preparatory stage in the creation of a dictionary of a certain type. Analysis of the audience's responses to the questions allows lexicographers to formulate principles of organizing mega-, macro- and microstructure of dictionaries, taking into account the needs of the potential users. A special place in lexicographic research belongs to the association experiment, the results of which (an additional label to lexical units) can be used by lexicographers when modeling a dictionary entry. The creation of terminological dictionaries is gaining separate popularity in practical lexicography. New branches of knowledge arise leading to the appearance of new terms that need to be included in dictionaries. Such reference works are traditionally published in printed form, but at present a large number of electronic special editions appear. Diff erent linguistic and mathematical methods are used in the process of modeling such dictionaries.
