Abstract

Тhe article deals with applying Russian phraseological units while translating an English literary text thus resulting in introducing the elements of “our” culture into the “other”, foreign cultural space. Phraseology of any language is known to represent important attributes of culture, furnishing the people’s historical memory, home customs and traditions and fi xing moral directions of their past and present. The article considers the change of an English idiom by a Russian image-bearing expression based on the principle of their “family resemblence”. Alongside, there are some other cases of analogous using of Russian idiomatic units which includes the following variants: a) an employment of a Russian idiomatic expression instead of an English univerb in a metaphor, slangism or jargonism format; b) utilizing a Russian idiom instead of an English word in its direct meaning in case the translation of this word corresponds to its imaginative counterpart within the frame of a Russian phrase as if revealing the fi gurative content of the initial English lexical unit; c) the same eff ect occurs when not a single word but a whole situation encourages the usage of a Russian phraseological unit which gives an additional expressiveness to the given fragment, not contained in it before. The choice of Russian phraseological units of English idioms related on the basic of “family resemblance” is the only way of their interpretation – it spontaneously brings the elements of “our” culture into the “alien” one; the alternative variants of Russian idioms “guest registration” in one and the same original text may vary depending on the translator’s intention.
