Abstract

Тhe article is devoted to the study of the plot-forming role of a toponym in a work of art using the example of M. Bussy's novel "Black Water Lilies". The purpose of the article is to determine the strategy for using the toponym Nettle Island in M. Bussy's novel "Black Water Lilies" as a plot-organizing marker. The purpose of the article is achieved by determining the functions realized by the toponym Nettle Island within the novel. In the course of the study, the role of a toponym in literary texts was studied, which consists in the fact that they are involved in creating the chronotope of a work, organize the virtual space of a work of art, and create the background against which the narrative unfolds. The specifi city of the use of toponyms in M. Bussy's novel "Black Water Lilies" was noted, where the author demonstrates the ability to organically weave elements of descriptions of the natural landscape into the plot of his works. Krapivny Island performs a number of stylistic functions, the purpose of which is determined by the author's objectives, identifi able through context and lexical markers. The neutral-informative function consists in indicating Krapivny Island as a specifi c geographical object associated with the most important events in the heroes' lives within the novel. The emotional-informative function of the toponym Krapivny Island is related to refl ecting the emotions the characters feel towards it and the feelings it evokes in them. In its scenographic function, the toponym Krapivny Island appears as a delimited scenic space within which the novel's scenes unfold. The identifi ed functions demonstrate the structuring role of the toponym in the development of the novel's plot.
