Abstract

Importance: the innovative activity of universities is the key to the formation and development of the country’s innovative economy as a whole. In this regard, it is of practical interest to identify the factors that catalyze such activity. The innovative activity of universities and the factors influencing it were the subject of this study. Purpose: to test the hypothesis about the significance of the impact of university income on its innovative activity. Research design: the relationship between the number of points in the THE ranking of the Research direction, the level of university funding, the level of publication activity and a number of calculated indicators was studied. The indicators per student, publication, citations are given, those that have the greatest relationship with the THE rating of the «Research» direction are highlighted. The absolute and grouped budgets of universities are estimated. The leading Russian universities and their position relative to the best innovative universities in the world are considered. Correlation coefficients between rating scores and significant indicators are determined. Results: A strong correlation was found between the incomes of the groups of analyzed universities and their scores in the Times Higher Education ranking in the «Research» direction. A high correlation has also been established between the innovative activity of the university and its publication activity according to the Nature Index database. It is substantiated that the high level of innovativeness of universities depends both on the amount of funding and on the activities of their teachers and researchers.
