Transformation of the industrial complex of the central federal district based on results of 2021–2024
Abstract
Importance: the subject of the research is the industrial production of the regions of the Central Federal District (CFD), particularly focusing on manufacturing and extraction industries. Purpose: the objective of this study was to identify changes in the role of manufacturing industries in the regional economies of the Central Federal District of Russia during the period from 2021 to 2024. Research design: the study was conducted based on Rosstat statistical data on the volume of shipped goods of own production, performed works, and services by industrial enterprises in the region over the specified period. To assess transformations in the sectoral structure, changes in the shares of extraction and manufacturing industries were calculated, followed by ranking the regions according to the degree of these changes. Results: the findings demonstrated that, overall, the share of manufacturing industries increased in the Central Federal District, reflecting sustainable growth and modernization of industry amid a simultaneous decline in the share of the extraction sector. Significant regional differences were identified: the greatest growth in manufacturing was observed in Moscow and Tula regions, while a substantial decrease was recorded in the city of Moscow and several border regions. The decline in the extraction sector, especially in Moscow, was linked to a complex of economic and geopolitical factors. Thus, the study uncovered substantial structural changes and differentiation in the development of industrial sectors across various CFD regions, which is important for the formulation of strategies and policies for industrial development.
