The paper presents the quantitative and qualitative analysis of reciprocity expression means functioning in the context of an utterance. The authors focus on the problem of speaker’s choice of a certain construction in order to express categorial semantics, which is the subject of functional grammar. The research differentiates three basic syntactic constructions expressing reciprocity: symmetrical, asymmetrical and pronominal that can be transformed into each other. The authors’ integral approach helps to reveal lexico-semantic, morphological, pragmatic factors of choice as well as factors defined by denotative situations. The quantitative corpus analysis of two Russian reciprocal synonymous verbs of speech shows that difference in their contextual behavior is explained by their morphological and lexico-semantic characteristics. The qualitative analysis reveals certain semantic features of utterances based on the asymmetrical construction that correspond to different factors defining why speakers prefer this construction to the symmetrical one. In addition, the authors bring the range of situations that can be reciprocal as well as present linguistic categories adjoining to reciprocity – sociativity, voice, reflexivity and unilateral action.
