STRATEGIES OF RENAMING SYNESTHETIC COMBINATIONS IN LITERARY TRANSLATION

Тhe article explores the features of renomination of synesthetic combinations that refl ect the simultaneous merging of heterogeneous sensations. The analysis is based on the translation into French of M. A. Sholokhov's novel "Quiet Flows the Don". In the book, semantic synesthesia serves as one of the artistic dominants, contributing to creating local color – picturesque images of the nature and life of the Don region. As a result of comparative analysis of the original text and its translation, ways of renaming are identifi ed, which vary depending on the translator's strategy – either preserving synesthesia or its partial or complete disruption. The analysis has shown that in most cases syncretic perceptual complexes are split, and their components, which pertain to this particular author, are renamed mainly with the help of linguistic means typical of the French language (sentences with coordinating constructions, metaphorical indication of the object, omission of one of the components). Thus, the syncretism of the combination is disrupted: the underlying associations are simplifi ed, becoming one-dimensional. This process is determined by the rhythmic, intonational, syntactic, and stylistic asymmetry of the Russian and French languages which is compensated by means of imagery more typical for French texts: comparison, metaphor, metonymy, expressive syntax. Thereby, an impressive equivalence of the translation text to the original text is achieved, i.e., the impact of the text on the reader of the translation which is close to the effect of the original.
