Russian single-industry towns: problems and solutions

Abstract

Purpose: analysis of the problems of Russian single-industry cities and the definition of ways to solve them. Discussion: STEEPV analysis of the situation of Russian single-industry towns, economic and statistical analysis of their problems suggests that, firstly, two thirds of Russian single-industry towns are in a depressed state with a worsening socio- economic situation, and secondly, Russian single-industry towns have a number of common problems that are similar to the problems of other single-industry cities in the world, as well as a number of specific ones characteristic of Russia. Results: the features of the functioning of Russian mono-cities at the present stage of development of economic relations are revealed. The current spectrum of common and specific problems in the development of single-industry towns has been formed. An assessment is made of the possibility of applying the world practice of solving problems of single-industry towns in Russian conditions. It has been substantiated that, although problems in monotowns do not have unambiguous solutions, they should be sought in the plane of effective interaction between all levels of government, enterprises and residents of monotowns themselves.
