Abstract

We have studied sorption recovery of scandium by phosphorus-contained ion exchange resins
Lewatit TP 260, Purolite S957, Purolite S940, Purolite S950 from scandium sulfate solution (pH 1.7), and
sulfuric acid solution of complex composition (MS), which simulates current solutions of uranium
underground leaching. With the use of ion-exchange resins Purolite S957 and Lewatit TP 260 equilibrium,
kinetics and dynamics of scandium sorption was studied. Specific surface area, volume and pore radius of ion
exchange resins was determined by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption. As a result of studying the kinetics
of the process we have found that the equilibrium of sorption from scandium sulfate solution is established at
1.5 and 2 hours for ion exchange resins: Lewatit TP 260 and Purolite S957 respectively, from the MS – 50
minutes for both resins. It was found that the rate-limiting step of the sorption of scandium for both ion
exchange resins is the internal diffusion, ion diffusion coefficients of scandium in the resin phase are 8.12 ·
10-12 m2
/s for Lewatit TP260, and 6.45 · 10-12 m2
/s for Purolite S957. Sorption isotherms of scandium from
MS on selected ion exchange resins and the equations that describe the data are presented. The maximum
value of the static exchange capacity by scandium (when the concentration of Sc in the original solution is
3.6 mg/L) is 623 mg/L for Purolite S957 and 301 mg / l for the Lewatit TP 260. According to the experiment
in dynamic conditions the output curves from scandium MS are presented. Dynamic exchange capacity оf
scandium at 10% slippage for ion-exchange resins Purolite S957 and Lewatit TP260 is 688 and 177 mg/L,
respectively. It is shown that the desorption of scandium from the ion exchange resin Purolite S957 can be
held by 5% solution of ammonium hydrodifluoride.
Results of the study allow us to recommend an ion exchange resin Purolite S957 for extracting of
scandium from sulfuric acid solutions of complex salt composition; for desorption of scandium - ammonium
bifluoride solution
