Sorption of manganese and lead by natural zeolite from aqueous solutions
Abstract
The sorption of metals from aqueous solutions by natural zeolite of Yagodninsky deposits
(Kamchatka) has been experimentally studied. In the range of metals concentrations up to 1000 mg/l the
sorption is adequately described by the equation of Langmuir. Maximum sorption capacity, the Gibbs free
energy were calculated. The maximum sorption capacity is as follows, mmol/g: for manganese (II) – 0.026;
lead (II) – 0.038. Estimated values of the Gibbs energy are equaled, kJ/mol: for manganese (II) ∆G= -15.4;
lead (II) – ∆G= -24.9. It confirms the guess about a stable fixation of metals ions on a zeolite surface. During
the study of sorption dynamics it was determined that the extraction degree of manganese and lead ions from
the model solutions remains at the level of magnitude 99.8–99.9%. The obtained results indicate that natural
zeolites can be used as an efficient material for the removal of Mn2+ and Pb2+ from wastewaters.
