Substantiation of analytical indicators of the comprehensive assessment of the economic security of universities
Abstract
Subject. The aggravated challenges of modern economics, a crisis expanding to all public spheres, and unstable economic situation create conditions under which the analysis of the economic security of higher education institutions is increasingly in demand since it helps make adequate managerial decisions. Identifying its units, areas, and analytical indicators and developing other methodological aspects that take into account the specific nature of the activities of the economic entity contribute to improving the level of economic security of higher education institutions and the quality of managerial decisions made by the top management of the university.
Objectives. To conduct a critical review and evaluate the main methods used to analyse economic security, to develop a system of indicators necessary and sufficient for assessing the economic security of higher education institutions with due account of the specifics and areas of their activities.
Methodology. The study uses general scientific and specific scientific methods of cognition (analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, grouping, comparison, etc.).
Results. A system of indicators was developed to assess the level of economic security of the university. The authors proposed to use intensity and performance indicators to analyse the economic security, they also justified the need to use indicators that take into account the specifics of the university activities, the database used for the analysis, and funding as compared to other state-financed organisations.
Results and discussion. The authors critically reviewed the indicators for assessing economic security developed by Russian and foreign researchers; systematised their advantages and disadvantages; proposed a system of analytical indicators necessary and sufficient for assessing the level of economic security of the university; systematised them and justified their scope from the perspective of the classical definition of the organisation’s economy.
Conclusions. It was concluded that at present there is no unified approach to the analysis of the economic security of the university. A critical assessment of methods used for its analysis can become the foundation for further development of the ideas about and methodological aspects of analysis of economic security aimed at ensuring informed and effective managerial decisions. A system of analytical indicators was developed to assess the economic security of higher education institutions which takes into account the specific nature and areas of their activities. This allowed determining the role of the analysis of economic security in the system of comprehensive economic analysis.
