Subject. Currently, there is no universal composition of governance mechanisms for digital platforms. The paramount role of managing external communities of legally independent participants suggests that relationships directly influence the formation of digital platform governance mechanisms, and the main task of governance mechanisms is to strengthen and improve stakeholder interaction. It is logical to consider governance mechanisms as a dynamic category, changing as a result of the search for better tools to support and develop relationships and to balance the rights and responsibilities of the parties.
Purpose. To contribute to the understanding of governance mechanisms of digital platforms.
Method. The methodological basis is a review of academic works to analyze the level of development of the issues raised, as well as to identify key positions and opinions of leading authors regarding aspects of digital platform governance, coordination mechanisms used by platform owners, and interaction of platform participants.
Result. The basis for understanding the mutual influence of relationships and governance mechanisms of digital platforms is formed by three components: access to the platform, activities on the platform, and distribution of benefits among platform participants. We disclosed the content of each component, identifying the specifics of governance and coordination mechanisms, and outlined directions for future research.
Conclusion. Digital platforms are systems of collaborative value creation, where the platform owner not only acts as a coordinator of relationships but also empowers participants. The specificity lies in the dynamic change in the balance of rights and responsibilities through the search for optimal delegation of authority and the application of restrictions to protect the interests of parties interacting on the platform. Mechanisms for fair income distribution are key for both the owner and the participants of the platform.
