Sorption of cesium radionuclides from aqueous solutions on natural and modified clays

Abstract

In this paper the sorption of cesium radionuclides on natural and modified montmorillonite clays of
Nelidovsky deposit (Belgorod region, Russia) and Tambo deposit (Lam Dong Province, Vietnam) has been
studied. Modification of clays has been performed by treatment with a sodium chloride solution, copyrolysis
of clays and husks of sunflower or coffee, as well as by impregnation of nickel ferrocyanide into
the clays. It is shown that the natural and modified samples are highly efficient sorbents for purification of
contaminated solutions from cesium radionuclides. Modified samples- carbon-clays and ferrocyanide-clays
may be used as sorbents for the removal of cesium from high salt solutions, in particular, from radioactive
liquid waste of nuclear power plants.
