Chromatographic properties of pellicular silica-based anion exchangers modified with polyethyleneimine
Abstract
Pellicular silica-based anion exchangers cause a great interest in ion chromatography due to their
high efficiency. However, the significant drawback of pellicular stationary phases could be their low stability
which often leads to the decrease of retention times of anions and efficiencies during the column exploiting.
New approaches to the synthesis of such sorbents are proposed. Novel method of covalent attachment of the
polymer (polyethyleneimine (PEI)) on the aminated silica surface using diglycidyl ether is developed. This
method allows the obtaining of sorbents with high efficiency, selectivity, and stability during the process of
their utilization. The latter could be due to the covalent attachment of ion exchange layer, which provides
fixed conformation of the polymer on the silica surface. The other way of stable attachment of PEI to the
surface of the silica matrix is found out: the adsorption of polymeric layer stabilized by cross-linking with
diglycidyl ether. The obtained anion exchanger allows the separation of at least 9 anions in less than 15
minutes with efficiency up to 42000 theoretical plates per meter, with the retention times being constant
during 350 hours of continuous work exploiting in single column mode.
