Abstract: the article discusses theoretical approaches to the concepts of institutional transformations. The features of the «shock therapy» and «gradualism» in Chile, China and the countries of the former USSR are investigated. Approaches to the assessment of transitional processes in the economy are highlighted – neolib- eral approach, institutional approach, system approach. Key characteristics of institutional changes in the framework of institutional transformations are identified. These include the intensity of changes, the total number and degree of changes, their irreversibility, inclusiveness and interrelations in general processes. The role of transformation costs in transitional processes is designated as additional costs, characteristic for the period of institutional transformations and associated with the mass replacement of institutions.
