Abstract

The article is devoted to the topical problem of the status of dialects as a subsystem of the Russian national language and the ways of their development (or disappearance?) at the present stage. In order to solve this issue, the material of sociolinguistics is involved, namely, the concept of the language situation in rural settlements. The fact is that only about 100 years of parallel development of the local dialect and literary language in rural settlements have passed. What is their relationship to each other? What is the linguistic situation in rural society? These and other questions are raised by the author for discussion. The article defines such concepts as monolingualism, bilingualism, diglossia; Attention is focused on the development of one linguistic situation into another depending on the change in the socio-economic and political situation in society, when: 1) monolingualism turns into diglossia, 2) bilingualism turns into diglossia, giving rise to a special type of Russian. However, to the greatest extent we will talk about the linguistic situation in Russian rural settlements of modern Russia, about the correlation between the literary language and dialects within individual societies and about the development of dialects in these conditions at all linguistic levels. It is revealed that the literary language at the present stage affects the dialect system as a shaking force, and the resistance of the dialect is manifested in the emergence of new trends that do not coincide with the literary language. Conclusion: dialects do not disappear under the infl uence of the literary language, but are modified.
